Seeking young adults with anxiety disorders
The Anxiety Department at Modum Bad is searching for participants for a new project targeting young adults with anxiety disorders.
The treatment will take place during an intensive two-week period.
– The treatment aims to change how we relate to our thoughts, says Therese Snuggerud, a psychologist and the leader of the new project.
Treatment goals during the treatment
Patients will explore ways to confront negative thoughts. “When we face negative thoughts with processes like worry, focus on threats, and ineffective coping strategies, anxiety persists,” explains Snuggerud. “In treatment, we work on how to use attention to break the processes that sustain anxiety. Throughout the treatment, participants should experience that they have a choice in how they handle negative thoughts and emotions. We want them to feel in control of their attention. The goal of the treatment is to give control of life back to the participant so that anxiety no longer dominates life.”

Two weeks of treatment
The treatment takes place through admission to Modum Bad for two weeks. “Some of the time is spent at home. During this period, participants practice handling anxiety in a new way in everyday situations,” explains Snuggerud. The treatment requires participants to be willing to explore strategies that maintain anxiety and actively work on facing anxiety in a new way. The treatment is based on metacognitive therapy and is conducted in a group. Metacognitive therapy addresses commonalities between diagnoses and is therefore well-suited for group therapy.
“We are looking for participants aged 18 to 30 with social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or agoraphobia with panic disorder.”
Who can participate?
– Who can participate in this treatment project?
– We are looking for participants aged 18 to 30. They must have a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or agoraphobia with panic disorder. We know that many individuals with these diagnoses struggle to maintain employment or studies. It is a prerequisite that other forms of assistance have been attempted but have not been successful. The new project is a collaboration between the Anxiety Department and the Research Institute at Modum Bad.
