Research project

  • Complex PTSD Study at Modum Bad: My PhD project started in 2017 and compares three treatment modalities for patients with complex PTSD: a) exposure therapy, b) skills training, and c) phase-oriented treatment (stabilization followed by exposure). Data collection was completed in 2021, and I am currently working on publishing the results.
  • Personalized Treatment: I am a co-supervisor and part of the project team associated with the PhD project of clinical psychologist Karine Frost, which aims to improve the utility of treatment for patients with trauma-related disorders through the development of a personalized benefit index. In this project, we will use historical data from patients who have completed treatment in the past to provide recommendations for treatment choices for new patients who have not yet started their treatment.

Research interests

The treatment of psychological difficulties related to repeated trauma in childhood is the primary focus of my work, both as a clinician at the Trauma Department at Modum Bad since 2011 and as a PhD candidate. We know that many individuals experience severe trauma as children, and it can have consequences in the form of psychological difficulties, reduced quality of life, and impaired functioning. My PhD project (see below) showed that we have effective treatment methods that help many, but the benefits vary both between different methods and within each method. Therefore, determining what is the best help for each individual is a central area for further research in this field. As we progress with this question, we will be better equipped to offer personalized treatment, likely with an even greater chance of achieving positive results for more individuals.
