Maren collaborate with Prof. Tim Brewerton at the University of South Carolina on a large clinical dataset from the US, where we investigate central and maintaining symptoms for patients with and without PTSD through network analysis.

About the Project

The project is based on a clinical data set from the Monte Nido residential treatment facilities in the United States.

Objectives

The project aims to identify central symptoms in a large sample (N=<2000) of patients with eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Another aim is to identify central bridge nodes that maintain comorbidity (PTSD, anxiety, depression and quality of life) and compare networks with patients with and without PTSD, to see whether symptoms differ.

Results

Preliminary results from the first paper (currently in review), found that interoceptive awareness (the ability to recognize feelings and bodily sensations), ineffectiveness (feelings of being flawed), and overvaluation of shape were central to the overall network. Depression was a highly central bridge node, suggesting that depression maintains the comorbidity between eating disorders and PTSD.
